Sacraments

The seven sacraments of the Catholic Church were instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church to make the love of God real and present in the world.

Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments by which one becomes a member of the Church and a new creature of Christ. Parents wishing to make arrangements for baptizing their children should call Bridgit Goedeke in the Office of Faith Formation at 410-879-1706 ext. 111. Expecting parents are encouraged to contact the office before the birth of their child. Adults interested in becoming Catholic should call the Office of the Pastoral Associate, Charlotte Henderson 410-879-8881.

Reconciliation is the liturgical celebration of God’s loving forgiveness of sin. The sacrament is offered every Saturday at 3:00 PM in the Chapel. First Reconciliation is offered to eligible children in grade 2 and above. The Archdiocesan eligibility requirement is that the child has participated in a formal Religious Education program for the year before and the year of preparing to receive the sacrament. An invitation to participate is sent to those eligible as registered participants in the Religious Education program with an open invitation for those enrolled in Catholic schools. At the Church of St. Mark, First Reconciliation enrollment is held in the Fall and the program runs October through Lent. Eucharist is considered the heart of the Church’s life and worship. It is also called the Mass or the Lord’s Supper. Participation in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist is expected of all Catholics of the age and ability to do so. First Eucharist is offered to eligible children in grade 2 and above. An invitation to participate is sent to those eligible as registered participants in the Religious Education program with an open invitation for those enrolled in Catholic schools. The Archdiocesan eligibility requirement is that the child has participated in a Religious Education program for the year before and the year of preparing to receive the sacrament. At the Church of St. Mark, First Eucharist enrollment is held in January and the program runs January through Easter. The children celebrate the sacrament for the first time either in choosing a special group family liturgy or at regularly scheduled weekend Mass, after Easter. Confirmation completes the grace of Baptism through an outpouring of special gifts of the Holy Spirit. St. Mark offers Confirmation For Youth to young people during 8th grade with class instruction and celebration of the sacrament during 9th grade. The Archdiocesan eligibility requirement is that the teen has participated in a Religious Education program for the year before and the year of preparing to receive the sacrament. An invitation to participate is sent to those eligible as registered participants in the Religious Education program with an open invitation for those in Catholic schools. Marriage - (Matrimony) is the foundation of the Christian family. When marriage takes place between baptized persons who enter into a covenant modeled on that between Christ and the Church, it is recognized as a sacrament. It is an exclusive contract between a man and a woman. Couples preparing for marriage should contact the rectory at least 6 months in advance of the desired date. The Rectory Office 410-879-9110

Anointing of the Sick – In this sacrament the Church celebrates its mission of spiritual and physical healing. Individual requests should be directed to the Pastoral Associate, Charlotte Henderson 410-879-8881. A Mass of Healing and Anointing is celebrated in the Fall.

Vocations – (Holy Orders) In this sacrament men are ordained to serve the Church as bishops, priests, or deacons. Any young man interested in information regarding a vocation to the priesthood should contact Fr. Austin Murphy at 410-547- 5426 in the Vocations Office for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
